To Strobe or Not to Strobe

Trent and I had the conversation regarding strobes at athletics events so lets see which pics you like best some are strobed some are not.....

The strobes on this one made Mehmet Okur look really two dimensional don't they? Almost like a cardboard cutout...a giant one....hmmm. Funny how he is staring right at me.

Wo! That last photo is crazy. He really does look like one of those cardboard cutout people things. A former roommate had one of those of George W. Once she put it outside of my bedroom door and scared the hell out of me.

As an old photo editor I just want to add my 2-cents worth on strobes. In basketball especially. Shooting with strobes will make you a better sports photographer. Sports is so much about getting the best moments, peak action and key moments of a game and shooting with a strobe forces you to work more on your timing. It takes much more skill, patience and mental focus to shoot with strobes in sports. And as you do this it will just make you even better when you shoot with available light. Every great sports photographer I have ever worked with knows this and can shoot amazing shots with strobes and available. So if you have the opportunity to work on strobes, especially as a young photographer, take advantage of it as much as you can--August Miller Asst. Photo Editor Deseret Morning News

Ahh strobes, It'd just be nice if you could position them yourself...
