The remnants of the chambers, which flanked the memorial space looked like skeletal scars, exposed and laying one shallow story into the earth. Leaving the memorial I walked up the rails and across the 'Rampe'. Israeli youth wrapped in Israeli flags with arms bound in leather bands began to sway and sing. In the days leading up to the visit there had been considerable talk regarding how we would feel, and what we would or wouldn't be able to process. Up until this moment I hadn't really granted myself the mental privacy from my own expectations. Gravel crunched beneath my feet like a baseline as I snap through and around the fading voices of small clusters walking around me. The chimneys swing past my peripheral vision and they looked like obelisks, equidistant and somber behind layers of barbed wire. I notice first, before most everything else, that I'm walking in the opposite direction. I'm not sure if a flow or traffic of history had been so apparent to me before. I don't know what grain exists 70 years later, but it felt somehow visceral as I walked against it. I knew it was a secret that separated myself from them. That secret spun of human capability and darkness. Confirmed by the direction I was able to walk, I felt I wasn't able to understand or witness much.
While following the rails back, a particular photograph that hung in the sauna building revisited me: A wedding day, white dress, beautiful round face, thin wedding band on a finger clutching a small glass of dark wine. She looked like my wife before anyone else. The face had a smile with a smirk of irreverent love. Thinking about this woman, and everyone represented across the wall of confiscated photos, I wondered how many lives considered and hoped that what was happening around them was temporary. A frightening stall from normal life, a press of some transcendent pause button. The right of life, that first layer and what its theft might have meant was translated to me by photographs of picnics, walks, weddings and holidays. Proof of life interrupted and in most cases never resumed.
Walking back to the gate it seemed like the appropriate form for what I had learned and felt, would be to live my days in reverence for those never realized. I wanted to preserve what was growing within; this esteem and devotion for the universal right of life whose violation had brought so many to this place. I'm not sure how I'll keep it with me, but the details from those photographs should lead me in the right direction I think: a sunny day, a clutched arm, a favorite jacket, a family gathered around a familiar table, a proud portrait or a smile behind a raised glass.

The Cricket and I stayed a block away from the Chrysler building in New York last week. I came back to the states to meet her and do some business then relax for Thanksgiving. We were walking home from a meeting and I realized we were so close to it. All I could think about was my brother Greg. In the same week he would be in a waiting room at a Utah hospital expecting his new daughter Issabella into the world as I stood at the foot of a style I only recognize because of him. After moving to Utah I connived ways to stay with him and my other brother Bill in Salt Lake for weekends during the summer and long weekends away from school. Slowly I picked up on his sense of style and his appreciation for design. Never pretentious or high brow, he seemed spun of a fabric that seeked the transcendental form. After graduating I moved to Salt Lake and was able to work with him at a photo processing company downtown and continued to wade through the bits and pieces of his brain until leaving Utah in 2002.

Before leaving for Berlin we had a long talk on the phone and he asked me to send him a photo of the Chrysler building for his office. I left too quickly and never found the photos I had from previous trips. I had forgotten about my failed assignment until we literally walked across the base of the building a couple weeks ago. It amazes me how a building, a space, can translate to such a connection between two people who have never stepped inside.

Was sprawled out in a cabin to be awoken just across the Polish border by a portly gentleman in a track suit informing me in Polish I'm sitting in his seat. Although there aren't seat assignments, I move. Not about to try and make friends at 7 a.m.
We meet again moments later. "Meet" used liberally. I walk behind them to the dining car. Maybe he always walks like he's about to kick some ass...not sure. I watch from my perch near the door back to 2nd class. He chews in decisive circles. His cheeks flinch like a horse muscle at the crack of a whip. Hunched over the table as if he confidently expects it to escape and run away, but is yet totally convinced of his ability to keep it under him and his traveling partner. Multiple shots of Smirnoff appear on his table via the steady balanced tray of the waiter. They are little glasses with curvy lines, each like some sort of seductress that starts work at 7:30 a.m. on a train for poster customers like him. He talks loud...and a lot. His friend provides the occasional color to the commentary that is resembling the play by play of an entire soccer game because he hasn't stopped for at least 15 minutes. Outside the fields are broken up by right angles. Lined with slender trees, holding onto the strong remaining leaves. Standing water in grooves made by a tractor a week earlier flash reflections of the sky as we viciously slide by.

We stand in a shade of what once was. A shadow is an understatement of structure and history, what we see is an accepted shade. Completely missing today, but with a name and history, the remnant of the Jewish quarter of Oświęcim is open for us to explore. I look at the Hebrew written on the inner sides of the synagogue and wonder how long it took for the crew to repair the walls. How does one pull the sunken characters from their latency. The tender touch and attention is probably equal to the still fragile state of rebuilding relations between the power and the powerless whose history we visit.

I woke up outside of Bad Hersfeld? I think it's in Hessen...maybe? It is a quiet and gorgeous morning from the hum of the train through the green grey glass to the fields outside. Slowly as the light rises I am plunging deeper into the Germany I know. Across from me a woman's head falls as she fights sleep, to my left a father and son discuss delays and connections. They have a pair of license plates, I imagine they are picking up a car. One of the last manly things on earth.

It is a color I haven't seen in years outside. It feels a part of me somehow. Like it was scraped from the inside of my cheek where it's camped since my childhood. It is the color of lake water and dust, green brown and grey mixed together in a color that only means life as the sun rises somewhere and heats everything with a latent pale yellow.

Headed to Bonn for an orientation for all of the grantees. I look like such a dork. I haven't shaved since the wedding, and tried to polish the turd by wearing a tie. It's like I look even more suspect in a group of academics when I try too hard. Can't wait for that group picture.

Time has officially passed. I ate McDonalds at the trainstation this morning and had the annual realization that it is terrible food and makes pieces of your soul die. Don't know what chemical is in the food, but it always makes you forget how you felt the last time you ate there. Must be hitting some kinda milepost every time that happens.

MAGNA — These days, Steve Norcross glimpses less and less of the sun setting from his front lawn in Magna, but tonight, he looks up and sees the clouds are turning peach and gray, with a slightly brown haze on the horizon.

"Pretty nice view, huh?" he asks with a smile, and a slight edge to his voice. Over his shoulder to the west, there is a berm, a hill and a giant yellow and black sign painted on the side of a Kennecott Utah Copper building that reads: "It's your safety — think about it." The message makes Norcross bristle.

Norcross lives across the street from the southeast corner of Kennecott's south tailings pond, a massive holding area for the pulverized rock that's been stripped of all value during the mining process and crushed to a powder-like substance. The site has caused conflict in the community over its instability in the event of an earthquake and several incidents in the late 1980s when thick clouds of tailings covered the town. Now, as Kennecott looks to expand their operations until 2039, the company has applied for a permit to increase their tailings impoundment, including building on a portion of the south pond — the idea of which makes Norcross angry.

"This is about profit," he says. "That is all this is about. ... The residents of Magna are not a concern. …

EUREKA — Halfway down Eureka's Main Street, near a gold rush-era cabin and across from a skeletal storefront that once housed a J.C. Penney store in 1907, Sharon Brewer sits in her consignment shop and eyes the stranger who just stepped through the door.

Outsiders stick out like a sore thumb in this almost-abandoned mining town. It's isolated, rimmed by a shield of mountains, and its residents prefer the solitude. When the Environmental Protection Agency flew in from Colorado in 2000 and informed the town it had a lead problem, the agency didn't stand a chance at blending in.

"When the EPA first got here, (the town) was hostile," Brewer says as she drives down the street, past the old mining head frames that started appearing in the late 1800s and still stand today. "My kids, excuse my French, but all you ever heard was, 'The effin' EPA; there's the effin' EPA.' If we still had a coffee shop, you'd have had an earful."

(This project ran the week I got married in August so I never got around to posting it. Amy Choate-Nielsen of the Deseret News wrote the three part story.)

A lifetime of memories flicker in the shadows of Nelda Lisonbee's back yard.

As she stands in the grass on a warm June afternoon, her long white hair pulled back into a youthful ponytail that curls down the middle of her back, Lisonbee can see the places her children played — the dirt, the canal — and of course, the image of her husband of 54 years always working the ground.

Her little white house sits at the top of a tiny hill in West Jordan, on a street lined with ramblers on one side and factories on the other. She once had a giant garden here — a small farm, really — where she grew enough food to completely feed her family of seven for five years. There were peach trees, pigs and turkeys, all keeping her family alive.

"There's no place I'd rather be than right here," she says as a cool breeze washes over her face.

But then again, sometimes she wishes she'd never lived here at all.

Still alive, living in the Charlottenburg area of Berlin at the moment. We've had a couple assignments for school and because I gave all my gear back to the newspaper, I only have my father in-laws point and shoot camera until my gear arrives next week. It's been a needed lesson on pride and humility when my photos are shown in class and I'm glad i don't know what's going through my classmates' minds when they think,..."didn't he say he worked for a newspaper in the states?...." Anyways, i'll try and post some more once I get the camera and am done with the first two weeks which are said to be the burliest.

A year and some change ago, Laura, Keith and I sat on the stoop outside a coffee shop down the street from our old office; a bit dazed on an early afternoon. A significant portion of the newsroom staff had been laid off that morning. There was a break in the conversation and the silence bred some thoughts so I let my head drop a bit and the muscles in my face tightened. "Now you're crying?", asked Laura in a protective way as if it was a last straw of some sort. The changes in the lives of my friends seemed to rumble that also in my life, things weren't going to be the same anymore.

Whenever fall approaches and I turn a year older, I panic as I think of the previous trifecta of seasons. Looking over my shoulder I can't believe how packed to the brim it was. So many things seen and felt. Now a year later I feel the same. Each year seems to supersede the previous. The job that I wanted more than anything since moving to Salt Lake and my outlook on that career slowly changed. The Cricket got a new job and plowed forward. She was headed for breaking waves and I was treading water, trying to decide what I was after. Somehow through my haze, we found enough clarity to decide to marry at the end of the summer. Two months later I was driving back from a friends house when she called saying I got a letter from some school I had applied to while trying to figure out my next step. It "fell open" while taking it out of the mailbox. She asked if she could read it to me over the phone. I think she had a feeling, as the words, "sorry try again" don't usually necessitate a giant envelope. The next six months were filled with plotting and discussing if it would be right to cut ties and move to Berlin. It felt barely more right than not right at first, and as if we were under a yellow light we sped forward through the intersection of our decision. The marriage came, I left the paper and we packed up the only home that was ever ours.

Before leaving we spent an evening with my family at my parents house up north. We ate familiar food from my mothers kitchen on the patio as my nephews and niece wrestled around on the grass and the family traded recent updates on life, kids, bullies at school and health. I thought of all the meals we've had out back. Elements of the family have moved and returned, and as I realized it was my turn to leave, tiny details taken for granted became more valuable. It was dark outside when we hugged goodbye. I watched my parents walk up the steps to the back of the house and tried to remember every memory at that door I could.

On the way out of town, I pointed to the top of a building in the center of town and said, "We used to sneak up there at night in high school, you wanna go?." I didn't want to, and didn't realize it until she promptly and decidedly said, "Yeah." During the distance between twisting the key to turn the car off and pulling it into park, I realized I was 10 years older. 10 years worth of second guessing and worry on how things were going to turn out. We climbed up a railing, onto a landing and pigeons flew violently out of a crawl space making our hearts and heels jump. "Up that?" she asked as she looked at a fire escape ladder rising two more stories. We went up and as I was about 3/4th's of the way up I looked back down. I looked back down 10 years and panicked. We came back down and tried to not to mention the feeling of defeat. I was embarrassed. I think she was surprised I didn't go up. Maybe it was the heavy heart of leaving home. Maybe it was the thick, strange and sad nostalgia of your youth's moments invisibly projected on street corners and roof tops as you drive through your high school home. Before jumping down from the landing which was really a smaller buildings rooftop, she took my arm and said, "Let's sit here for awhile." Then asked how I was feeling.

It was one of those moments where you're so far in each others head, you only need a handful of sentences to talk about everything. Feeling older, family, leaving home, etc. After a short silence she said, "Micha, we gotta go up there." I knew she was right, and we scrambled up the ladder to the quiet black space that I hadn't been to since 18.

We'd been married a month, the wedding had gone so fast. It had been a month of noticing the ring on my finger, and hearing myself say, "my wife" when talking to others. It didn't seem real until then, smiling in the soft wind and near silence above a sleepy street. After a few minutes, we climbed down and the drive home became our victory lap for the fullest year.

A few years ago a friend and I were talking about photography and periodically he would give me advice. He said something that I’ve thought about quite a bit since then. “Photography doesn’t owe you a career.” I think what he meant is that you have to work for what you want, and the level of how much you have to work is not always on your terms. I agreed with him, and I still do. Although I feel incredibly fortunate to have gathered such meaningful experiences over such a short time here at the news. I don’t really know if I’ve necessarily earned what I’ve been able to see, record and do here. It’s been my home, my school and for the most part all I know in regards to a professional career.

Because photography and journalism don’t “owe” us careers, that which we’ve gathered along the way becomes even more valuable. In the end photojournalism has given me experiences that have taught and defined me, friends I consider family, an appreciation for this country and state, and technically even a wife.

Journalists are special people. For as competitive as the industry is, even in the best of economic times, everyone always looks out for the newbie, the beginner. I’ve learned that good journalism can be a sacred and perfect church produced and maintained by imperfect people. I’ve felt like everyone’s little brother for the past six years and my appreciation for you all runs deep.

Our home aka “TerryGross” has been such a special place and a few nights ago, before leaving, the Cricket and I sat out back and thought about all the good times we’ve had there with many of you. I’ve noticed over the past few years that I would look back on these moments with an aching heart. Thank you. I’ll/We’ll miss you.

The importance of location loses it's value if within ourselves we remain somewhere else. Being in Tahoe with the Cricket for our honeymoon was one of the first trips we've been able to take where we could be completely present. We cleaned and hauled up the remains of the wedding and jumped in the car, stopped on the way to buy a new tent then headed for California. The past month has been wonderfully hectic with leaving the news, getting married and moving to Berlin. For the first time since I was 16 I don't have a camera and I barely know what to do with myself. Until I get the new digs, I'll catch up on the life between.

"Aban" answered the door and patted me on the back as he repeatedly said, "You're welcome, you're welcome" as I walked inside his condo where he lives with his wife and kids. After working alongside the U.S. military in Baghdad, he and his family were targeted in a series of murder attempts. On the porch he lifted his shirt to show one of 4 bullett wounds that nearly killed him. The scars are slowly healing but the mental consequences of his ordeal remain with the family. He was a very warm person, with a translucent skin that did a poor job of hiding the battles he continues to mentally fight. Being nearly completely disabled necessitates his wife having to work in a foreign country while he stays at home. This burden has added to the PTSD and led to several suicide attempts. With the funding for the remaining government agency that provides mental counseling and care for refugees drying up next month, the future of himself and the family are as unclear as they appear to be unstable. Worked on a follow up story on a young man who is facing a long road of recovery after a snowboarding accident one month ago. It was the first day he had been in a car since the accident and I photographed his physical therapist and family learning how to transition him from chair to a car seat. I imagine the whole month has been an unreal chain of events and realizations, many of which are re-learning things most of us take for granted. As soon as we got in the car he had his buddy connect his iPod, turn on a hip hop song, roll up the windows and thump bass through the entire car. F-words from the song shot from the speakers and rang through the ears of his father and grandfather who were also in the car....a few awkward seconds of silence and then laughter from everyone while the father; Brian, changes the song. We took a slow drive down State Street to a 7-11 where Brian bought and then delicately fed a Slurpee to his son Gates. The words that fail, when you talk to someone going through such a thing, are the same that fail when you try and describe such a connection between a father and son. There have been some pretty gnarly developments in regard to RSL as of late. This was the big news a few weeks ago as they faced off against FC Monterrey for the CONCACAF Cup here in SL. It was a heart breaking loss. I'm sure most folks who are into soccer have already seen some game action photos, so here's the fringe of the game.

Did a story on million dollar homes yesterday and spent some time with some realtor types. Seems like it would be a pretty interesting and amazingly competitive job. Apparently 2011 has already seen an increase in home sales for homes listed at or above 1 million. Also an increase in how many of those homes are paid for with cash. Would have been interesting to see that story next to a tax cuts story.

Weber Co. Flooding

A small levee on the Weber River burst last week due to stress from the runoff. Doing aerials it is usually pretty tricky to find anything human, the views tend to translate into an epic photo of record. This was about as close as I got to showing anything really human. This was a small area inside of Plain City, where significant flooding kept residents busy with sandbagging and building over a few days.

I didn't mess with these colors at all. There is a cause way across the Great Salt Lake that is owned by Union Pacific, it splits the lake into the North and South sections where colors denote differences in mineral qualities. Crazy huh? Shot this from a helicopter while doing some aerials.
