"Psshhh..."
If you are saying or thinking - "pssh,...I could have taken that." Let me be the first to say - I know. I was walking away from an assignment tonight and just really liked the yellow church and luckily someone was walking about five steps behind me. I have learned that as a photographer, you often fall in love with pictures that aren't that great, but due to the fact it was a lucky shot, or you waited for six hours for it to happen or something like that, makes you become obsessed with it, replace your screensaver or desktop background with it and show it to all your friends. The problem is that half the picture is actually in your head in the form of how it was made....unfortunately no one else has any idea of this half and that's why they look and say,.. "yeah nice" while they are really thinking thinking"psssh...." I do it all the time too.

I wish I had some "lucky" shots I could take. But I'd need to be good enough to take advantage of the luck.
And then the "weeks work" judges on SS rip it to bits and they don't even know what you went through...
;)
reli nice picz!
I think any kind of art making is all about seeing. Sure, maybe anybody could operate a camera or hold a pencil or mix that same color of paint that I did. But it takes an artist to notice and capture what's in front of them. I would say 9 out of 10 people would have walked right by that golden church light without even a glance sideways. We're lucky we have people like you to show us what is worth looking at.
Mike Terry, famed photographer the blogosphere over, commented on an obscure and largely unvisited blog belonging to Molly Farmer last week. Seeing the spontaneous poetry attached to one of her entries reportedly caused Farmer to gasp.
"I'm honored and a little taken aback," she was reported as saying. "I mean, all that stuff about Donkey Kong and Pong was just so powerful. And knowing that he dances adds another dimension to his artistry. He's like...four dimensional or something."
Your photos always touch my heart.. I enjoy every piece of your work. Thanks.
I know exactly what you mean. I do the same thing- the pictures that I work the hardest for are the absolute best in my mind even though all my friends and family think they are only mediocre.
I love your work, by the way- fantastic!
I think it's beautiful!
i can really relate to that 'pssh' thing. i personally try to never underestimate what a person puts into their work but as a graphic designer the 'pssh' happens every now and then from people who think photoshop and illustrator is as simple as 1+1=2. the art industry on a whole is very subjective.
nice pic!
exactly! the behind the scenes work never shows in the image...
Very nice.
The same with me :(
It is so pitty that sometimes you cannot share your mind :)
Trying not to miss such moments,is really a hard part as it need our attention. That picture fits good in the desktop.
I love your work! It's amazing! I'm all about the shots like this. whether this was a lucky shot or not, you're freaking talented! Thanks for inspiring me!
Wow! You are so talented! Luck has nothing to do with it. Great job!
The picture is beautiful when I'm listening to Schubert at the same time ...( http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2rgg9_schubert-trio-mi-bemol-majeur-op100_music )
Maybe Art is a combination. It makes me think of the theory of "Synesthésie" in french, I don't know how to explain it in American...
Well, I could try and I'm sorry for my errors.
A Synésthésie is an association of sensations..really hard in English!^^
Just look here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synesthesia
;-)
I couldn't have taken it... I think it's perfect.
Whether I could have taken it or not, that's still a lovely photo. Good job!
Yeah Mike – Anyone could have taken it but nobody would have. Most would say that would be cool and walk by, but you stop and say that is cool and take a picture. You have always been like that – you are creative and not lazy. I think that is why you are so good. By the way congrats on your recent success. Your pretty much a celebrity.
as for the psshhh shot..
BEAUTIFUL!
I don't think that level of difficulty has anything to do with a photograph being "good" or not. The only time that I would think it would is if you were a photojournalist and got a shot over another person. It is important to be technically sound though. I enjoy your blog.

I just found your blog randomly. Moments of boredom in an office. I've only really read this post, but I like how you write and how personable it sounds.
Thanks.
I also like to take photo, but my dad hates on these all artistic jobs, so I have to give up.....Wish you all the best in your career!
This is exactly why I love photography. They capture that specific moment in time. You had to be at that exact spot at that time to capture that and its what makes the picture so special. Good job!
If I could do that, I would do that.
Simplicity is beautiful...

Ha, you are totally right... makes me wonder what the back story in people's head is for the 'universally' liked photos. Great shots.
hi
i found your blog tonight by random
and needed something to give me
well i don't know what it was i was looking for
but i found it in your pictures and your amazing abilities
and maybe just for the simple fact that every single one of them is absolutley beautiful
thank you for making my night
Beautiful shot! I love this.
I'm completely agree with you...these kind of images got really special and they stay in our minds.
I'm a fan of your work, you're great!
and that is why art is relative. we always attach our sentiments, which is something completely ours, something we cannot share. your pieces are beautiful, shots and words both.
Hi Mike,
Magic. And you don't need me to tell you that. Thanks for sharing.
Warm regards, Patsy in El Paso
Mike, I often view a photograph and wonder, well, what were the circumstances? who/what/where/when/why? It's the backstory that is fascinating. I am happy that you have such a cool blog and that you tell us more of the story. Merry Christmas! Keep up the fine work!
Regard, Patsy in El Paso
"psshhhh... whatever." is my response to your post. I love love love this shot. I love it's grandeur & whimsy. The spirit, the luck, the mystery, what-have-you. It's that beautiful space where chance and talent converge.
